  • As part of the Polish language course, participants of the Summer School 2024 will also visit the Jagiellonian University Museum in Collegium Maius.
  • Details of the trips, including departure times from Krakow and return times, will be provided by the assistants a few days before the planned trip.
  • Please be informed that the program may change due to weather changes or other unforeseen events.

The Jura Vineyard was founded in 2015 in the village of Rybna, located approximately 25 km from Krakow. It is an ecological vineyard where no chemicals are used to protect the vines. The first trial wines were made just a year after the vineyard was founded, and regular annual wine production began in 2017. The Jura vineyard is not only a place for wine production, but also a venue of integration meetings, weddings, and tastings.
Participants of the Summer School 2024 will take part in wine tasting, vineyard tour, and team-building games.

Interesting facts on vine making in Poland: 

Collegium Maius is the oldest academic building in Poland. It was donated to the community of the Jagiellonian University by King Władysław Łokietek at the beginning of the 15th century. Until the mid-19th century, it served as a library, a place for lectures, a treasury and a residence for professors. In 1980, Collegium Maius was designated as the seat of the Jagiellonian University Museum.

Participants of the 2024 Summer School will learn about the history of Collegium Maius and the University, see centuries-old university collections and visit, among others, the Jagiellonian Hall, formerly a lecture hall.

Krakow's Old Town is one of the most culturally and historically important places in Poland. In 1978, it was enlisted in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The area placed on this list includes the Old Town within the former walls, Wawel Hill and the Kazimierz and Stradom districts. The center of the Old Town is the Main Market Square, where there are monuments such as St. Mary's Church (Kościół Mariacki), the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) and the town hall tower.

Participants of the 2024 Summer School will visit the Main Market Square, Wawel Hill, Wawel Cathedral, walk the most beautiful streets of the Old Town, learn about the history of Krakow and observe its contemporary character.

Interesting facts about the Old Town in Krakow and museums worth visiting:

  • In St. Mary's Church there is a late Gothic altar, considered a masterpiece of sculptural art, created by Wit Stwosz. More information about St. Mary's Church can be found here (official website of the church). 
  • The Old Town is surrounded by a green belt called Planty, which was built on the site of the former city walls and moat.
  • In the Cloth Hall there is a unit of the National Museum, or more precisely, the Gallery of 19th Century Polish Art: website of the unit
  • You can visit the underground level of the Main Market Square! Chech out the Underground Market Square Museum: museum’s website
  • The International Cultural Center (ICC) is located at the Main Market Square. The ICC deals with the promotion of the culture of Central and Eastern Europe and the topic of cultural heritage. During walking tours around Krakow, participants of the Summer School 2024 will visit the following districts of Krakow:

STARE PODGÓRZE DISTRICT – like Kazimierz, Podgórze was a separate city that was merged with Krakow in 1915. During World War II, a Jewish ghetto was established in the district, the history of which is told by many memorial sites and museums, including Plac Bohaterów Getta and Apteka Pod Orłem. In Podgórze there is also the Center for the Documentation of the Art of Tadeusz Kantor Cricoteka and the Krakus Mound, from which you can admire the panorama of Krakow.

NOWA HUTA DISTRICT – the decision to build Nowa Huta was made in the 1950s by the authorities of the Polish People's Republic (PRL). The city was supposed to be a model socialist city, implementing the social and production policy of the socialist state. The area of the original urban layout of Nowa Huta was entered into the register of national monuments. The most important places in the district are the Central Square with Avenue of Roses (Aleja Róż), the 13th-century Cistercian Abbey with the Church of St. Bartholomew and Wanda's Mound.

KAZIMIERZ DISTRICT – a district that is part of the Old Town area, strongly connected to Jewish culture and the cultural life of Krakow in general. Until the 18th century, Kazimierz functioned as a city, then it was incorporated into Kraków. In this district there are many monuments of Jewish culture (e.g. Old Synagogue), cultural institutions (e.g. Jewish Culture Center) and restaurants and cafes where the social life of Krakow's inhabitants takes place.

Zakopane is one of the most famous mountain resorts, located in the immediate vicinity of the Tatra Mountains. It is the highest situated city in Poland. Zakopane is visited by approximately 1.5 million tourists annually!  Within the administrative borders of Zakopane there is part of the Tatra Mountains, with the highest point being the peak of Świnica – 2301 m above sea level. One of the most famous streets in Zakopane are the so-called Krupówki – a busy city center full of souvenir shops. In Zakopane, there are also plenty of buildings representing the Zakopane style (an architectural style).

Participants of the 2024 Summer School will be able to choose to visit Zakopane or go with a guide to one of the mountain trails.

  • Zakopane is home to the largest ski jump in Poland, called Wielka Krokiew, which was built in 1925.

The factory was established in 1937 as a place for the production of enamel and tin products, and from 1939 it was managed by Oskar Schindler. After the outbreak of World War II, Schindler employed Jews in his factory, saving them from being deported to concentration camps. The former administrative building of the Factory houses an exhibition presenting the history of Krakow during the German occupation (1939-1945), while the former factory buildings now house the MOCAK Museum of Contemporary Art

Participants of the 2024 Summer School will have the opportunity to learn about the history of Krakow during World War II, including the history of saving Jews by Schindler.

Since the 13th century, the "Wieliczka" Salt Mine has been an important element of the Polish economy. Together with the mine in Bochnia, it was part of the salt mining and sales company called Żupy Krakowskie. The salt deposits that are still mined in the mine are about 14 million years old. In 1978, the salt mine was included in the 1st UNESCO List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage.

Participants of the 2024 Summer School will follow the Tourist Route, visiting the most important parts of the mine with an experienced guide, including the Chapel of St. Kingi, mine shafts and underground lakes.

Pieskowa Skała Castle is located in the Ojców National Park, in the picturesque valley of the Prądnik River. It was built in the 14th century as a Gothic castle, then rebuilt in the Renaissance style. It served as a royal residence. The permanent exhibition in the Castle includes exhibits illustrating changes in European art from the Middle Ages to the mid-19th century. There is a landscape park adjacent to the Castle, where you can see, for example, the famous Mace of Hercules - a limestone rock in the shape of a mace.

Participants of the 2024 Summer School will see the permanent exhibition presented in the Castle and will have the opportunity to walk around its surroundings.

  • Pieskowa Skała Castle is located on the so-called The Trail of the Eagles' Nests, a route running through the Lesser Poland and Silesian Voivodeships, connecting castles and strongholds built on Jurassic rocks. The Dunajec is one of the most beautiful Polish rivers. Its most picturesque part is the so-called The Dunajec Gorge, located in the Pieniny National Park. Rafting on the Dunajec River is organized by the Polish Association of Pieniny Rafters. Raftsman formerly dealt with river rafting of goods. Currently, this profession is mainly related to tourism. 
  
Participants of the 2024 Summer School will take part in a wooden raft trip on the Dunajec River. Additionally, they will also visit the Niedzica Castle.

  • The rafting route allows you to see the most important peaks of the Pieniny Mountains, including Trzy Korony and Sokolica. 
  • The castle in Niedzica was built in the 14th century on a hill near Lake Czorsztyńskie. More information about the Castle can be found here (website: castleniedzica.pl).

The mound in Krakow's Zwierzyniec district, built in 1820-23, commemorates Tadeusz Kościuszko, a unique figure in Polish history, the leader of the Kościuszko Insurrection of 1794 and a hero of many nations. By visiting the permanent exhibition of the Kościuszko Museum, Summer School participants will be able to enter the interactive world of Tadeusz Kościuszko, learn about the most important episodes of his life, explore Kościuszko’s heritage as the symbol of the fight for independence and see him from his more private side.

After visiting the Museum, Summer School participants will climb the Kościuszko Mound, and enjoy a beautiful view of Krakow and the Tatra Mountains from the top od the Mound.

  • There is a cafe in the Museum building, and a larger restaurant is located on the observation deck.
